10 LGBTQ+ Christmas Films and TV Shows That Are Actually Worth Watching

While we’re thankful there are now a ton of LGBTQ+ Christmas films and festive TV episodes to choose from, it’s getting more and more difficult to separate the good ones from the downright trashy – and not in a good way!

If you’re looking to get into the festive spirit with your partner, hosting a film night with a group of queer pals or just tucking yourself up on the sofa with a big glass of hot chocolate, here’s our pick of the best LGBTQ+ Christmas films and TV shows we think are actually worth watching.

It’s hard to believe this LGBTQ+ Christmas classic only came in 2021, especially as it’s already earned cult status among the gays. Follow Peter as he persuades his best friend to pose as his boyfriend to avoid judgment from his family who say he’s always single. Everything looks fine until Peter’s mum sets him up on a blind date with her hot PT, obvs.

Why we like it: Two words. Jennifer Coolidge. 

With Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis (from San Junipero!) and Aubrey Plaza, this is the biggest Christmas win for the lesbians of all time. Follow couple Abby and Harper as they go to the latter’s home for Christmas and Abby quickly discovers that Harper hasn’t come out to her conservative parents – or her super dysfunctional sisters. 

Why we like it: It’s so much better when the love interests actually have chemistry together – even if it’s not the two you’re supposed to root for. 

We’re not sure why queer people are so obsessed with the muppets, but with festive films as fun as this – who really cares? Sit back and relax as you watch Fozzie Bear's mum get a surprise visit from her son, Kermit the Frog, The Great Gonzo and the rest of the Muppet Show in a Christmas extravaganza that’ll make you appreciate your chosen family even more.

Why we like it: Gonzo is definitely queer – and it makes conservatives even more angry when you say so. 

Joy to the world! There’s finally a gay Christmas hallmark film. On the coldest and darkest winter days when you need cheering up, watch as Sam, a “workaholic bachelor,” recruits his ripped neighbour Jason to help with babysitting his niece and nephew over the festive season. You’ve probably already guessed what happens, but this just makes it even better. 

Why we like it: It’s got Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett – the unofficial King of trashy gay Christmas films. 

Definitely not the cheeriest of LGBTQ+ Christmas films, but definitely one that’s still worth watching, Carol follows an older woman navigating a difficult divorce who starts a forbidden affair with an aspiring female photographer. With 1950s homophobia, jealousy from the ex-husband and tons of pure melodrama, it’s heartbreakingly brilliant. 

Why we like it: It’s a WLW classic – and will make you strangely nostalgic for department stores.

Move over Love Actually,there’s a new leading Christmas rom-com – that actually has queer representation! Get your tissues ready as you follow the story of Hugh, an uptight attorney, who comes home for Christmas. After reconnecting with his high school crush, Hugh’s forced to think about what he really wants from his future, just as he’s offered his dream job in London…

Why we like it: The lead actors are married in real life, which makes the whole thing even cuter. 

Tangerine is one of the best examples of transgender representation on screen – but with a Christmas twist! This is the story of Sin-Dee, a trans sex worker in LA who on Christmas Eve learns from her friend Alexandra that her boyfriend/pimp has cheated on her with a cisgender woman while she was in jail. What follows is both hilarious and heartwarming.

Why we like it: It was the first film to feature two trans women as lead characters. It was also shot entirely on iPhones.

There’s not much that Dolly Parton can’t make better, including a Christmas musical. Grab your most eccentric gays and watch the story of Regina, a female Scrooge who wants to sell the small town her father started to make even more money. Can her guardian angel, best Margeline and an extended network of gay hairdressers convince her otherwise?

Why we like it: Not only has it got Dolly, but it’s got Christine Baranski, too.

Even though it looks like a promo for the next season of Drag Race, The Bitch Who Stole Christmas tells the tale of a fashion journalist who’s sent on an assignment to a Christmas-loving town by her ruthless editor. While digging up a juicy story, she accidentally gets involved with the town’s yearly winter ball competition – which has a dark side.

Why we like it: There’s a star-studded cast including Ru Paul, Michelle Visage, Ross Matthews, Kim Petras, Charo and countless Drag Race alumni.

If you haven’t already watched Pose three times through, this is your sign to start. For those familiar with Ryan Murphy’s drama series about New York City's ball culture, this episode is well worth a Christmas rewatch as the characters recount their own bad holiday experiences before coming together and reframing what “family” truly means to the LGBTQ+ community.

Why we like it: The last scene with the House of Evangelista enjoying a feast at a Chinese restaurant will give you a lump in your throat. Guaranteed.
