To mark this year’s International Non-Binary People's Day, we’re highlighting some incredible non-binary icons that we think you should know about - 14 of them to be exact. We are celebrating on the 14 July, of course!
Bella Ramsey
Best known for acting alongside the absolute daddy that is Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey is the breakout star of The Last of Us.When they came out as nonbinary, they told interviewers their gender has "always been very fluid" and being called ‘they’ is the “most truthful thing” to them. “That’s who I am the most.”
Janelle Monáe
Looking for more queer artists for your playlist? Look no further than Janelle Monáe. The singer first shared that they identified as nonbinary during an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith, saying, “I just don’t see myself as a woman solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the 'he' or the 'she.' I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am, beyond the binary.”
Amandla Stenberg
From their breakout role as Rue in The Hunger Games, to high-profile films and TV shows (including Dear Evan Hansen and Bodies Bodies Bodies), actor Amandla Stenberg publicly came out as nonbinary in a series of Tumblr posts after a fan asked their pronouns. In later interviews, Stenberg said, "[Gender] can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. I tend to believe that gender, as we've set it up in current-day society, doesn't actually exist."
Bimini
Series 2 finalist (and people’s winner) of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, Bimini shared their story about how they came to terms with their nonbinary identity in a candid conversation with fellow non-binary contestant Ginny Lemon. In the episode, Bimini stated that “nonbinary isn’t a new thing, just a new term” and “when there’s 7 billion+ people in the world, it just doesn’t make sense to fit everyone into a binary.”
Emma Corrin
You might recognise actor Emma Corrin from their role in My Policeman opposite Harry Styles or their brilliant portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown; it was the latter that made Corrin realise they were nonbinary, telling the New York Times, "I feel like Diana helped me explore so many depths of myself and do a big internal discovery of what I was feeling about everything because she was a very complex person."
Mauree Turner
When Mauree Turner joined the Oklahoma legislature in 2021, they marked two incredible milestones: the first Muslim to join the legislature - and the first nonbinary state lawmaker in the US. Turner served as a member of the Democratic Party in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 2021 to 2024, and remains a fearless advocate for 2SLGBTQ+ rights, criminal justice reform, and community care.
Asia Kate Dillon
Interestingly, it was Asia Kate Dillon’s role in Billions (playing Taylor Mason) that made them fully realise their nonbinary identity. When they read the script, they discovered something about the character that truly stuck with them: a confident young intern who introduces themselves to their hedge fund boss by firmly stating, "My pronouns are they, them and theirs." This moment led to a significant realisation that they weren't just gender-fluid as they had previously believed.
Elliot Page
Sure, there’s only a 10% chance you’re not already familiar with actor and producer Elliot Page, but we still think they deserve to make this list! Page came out publicly as non-binary and transgender back in 2020, saying, “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
Emma D'Arcy
One of the first nonbinary actors to lead a show of a hit franchise, Emma D'Arcy first graced our screens in 2022, playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon - now one of our favourite ever TV characters. After their immediate success in the show, they told E! News, “When I was starting out, I felt that I had to present as a woman to find success in this industry. It wasn’t sustainable, and I stopped pretending. And weirdly, at that point, I got nominated for Best Actress for the Golden Globes, which is, like, beautifully ironic.”
Jack Haven
Actor Jack Haven is best known for playing both Casey in Atypical and Maddy in I Saw the TV Glow. They publicly shared their nonbinary identity in November 2019, saying they "always felt a lil bit boy, lil bit girl, lil bit neither" and that using they/them pronouns "feels right". Atypical fans, rise up!
Indya Moore
For trans and non-binary actor Indya Moore, the role of Angel in Pose was close to their heart - as it is to ours, Angel and Papi forever! When asked what it feels like for trans women to look up to Indya as a non-binary, femme-presenting person, they said, “I think it’s wonderful. I appreciate being someone whom people can identify with and who can encourage others to have confidence in themselves. That means a lot to me.”
G Flip
Another great non-binary artist on this list is G Flip. After growing up in Australia without any non-binary representation in music to look up to, G Flip has dedicated their career to “being that person that I never had as a kid, because I know how it feels. I know that if I can make one kid feel less like I did, then my job is done."
Liv Hewson
Australian actor and star of Yellowjackets, Liv Hewson, knew they were non-binary when they were just 16, telling Teen Vogue, “I came across the term ‘nonbinary’ for the first time, and it was just immediate.” After initially keeping their identity separate from their career, they fulfilled their decade-long dream of getting top surgery in 2023, saying, “I stand differently, I walk differently, I carry myself differently. It feels different in my body than it ever has. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. It’s taught me a lot.”
