10 Of The Campest Halloween Films To Watch This Spooky Season

Bright orange Halloween-themed graphic with black silhouettes of a spider, cobweb, flying witch, and graveyard. The Rainbow & Co flag logo appears at the top. Bold black text in the centre reads: “10 of the Campest Films to Watch This Spooky Season.” The design has a fun, playful vibe celebrating queer culture and Halloween.

Colder weather, shorter days, and the eternal struggle about whether or not to put the heating on. It can only mean one thing… spooky season is here. And what better way to celebrate Gay Christmas by watching our favourite (and campest!) Halloween films?

Scooby-Doo: The Movie

Giant sparkly skulls, Daphne’s purple gogo boots, the body switching scene that sent everyone into a gay panic? It has to be the Scooby-Doo Movie. Made even better since the network recently confirmed Velma as a lesbian in canon. Jinkies!

Hocus Pocus

Nothing says Halloween movie marathon like this cult classic. Between the Salem setting and iconic trio of witches (you thought Let’s Have a Kiki was the campest thing SJP has ever done?), Hocus Pocus is Gay Christmas to a T.

Death Becomes Her

The pipeline of watching Death Becomes Her as a kid and being part of the LGBTQ+ community is all too real, and giving it another whirl will unlock memories you never knew you had. This fever dream of a movie is Mez Streep at her finest, and the fashion is everything, too.

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark

You don’t get 80s campy classics like Elvira anymore. Follow this eccentric horror movie host as she settles into a notoriously prudish neighbourhood, complete with so-bad-they’re-good gags, a sprinkling of witchcraft and one of the biggest genre icons. Old school Hallows at its finest.

Jennifer’s Body

Sigh, this movie was truly ahead of its time. Jennifer’s Body doesn’t just serve the perfect mix of camp horror, but it also caused more swathes of bisexual panic than the late noughties had ever seen. You’ll never forget where you were for your first, "I go both ways."

Lisa Frankenstein

A new film, but a total instant classic, we’re so here for Zelda Williams' directorial debut. Not only is Lisa Frankenstein set in the same fictional universe as Jennifer's Body (back-to-back viewing, anyone?), but it gives Heathers in the best way possible. It’s 80s horror with a modern twist.

The Rocky Horror Glee Show

We didn’t know how good we had it with Glee, and this episode was truly one of the show’s campest. Why was Santana leaning over us during "Touch-a, Touch Me" such a lesbian awakening, and wasn’t Mr Schuester just complaining about not having the budget for Glee Club? I guess we’ll never know!

Cabin in the Woods

Sometimes, the best films are the most unexpected – and this movie is arguably better if you don’t watch the trailer beforehand. With a great cast and even better plot twists, this film is one for the dedicated slasher heads. Not to mention, you know a film is going to be good when the genius behind Buffy is involved.

A Simple Favor

Blake Lively in a suit, Anna Kendrick always having sex after funerals, and a whole lot of martinis. This seemingly sapphic romantic comedy turned missing case spooky thriller is as camp as can be. No pun intended…

Beetlejuice

It would only be right to finish this list with Beetlejuice, one of the campest of all. Don’t be fooled by the big-name stars and uber-eccentric style of this Tim Burton movie; Beetlejuice has also got a much deeper message. It’s witty and inventive – and never grows old.
