"Lavender Menace" is a term that refers to the perceived threat of lesbian feminists to the mainstream feminist movement in the US during the 60's and 70's. It originated from Betty Friedan's speech at the National Organization for Women (NOW) Conference in 1969, where she criticised the presence of lesbian feminists in the movement. The term was later reclaimed by lesbian feminists as a symbol of their resistance to exclusion from the movement, and is now often used to describe the intersection of feminist and LGBTQ+ activism.
